Four Wheeler Covers: Complete Sizing Guide for Every Major ATV Brand
Most sizing mistakes happen because riders measure the machine alone, forgetting that racks, windshields, and gun boots add 6-12 inches to what actually needs covering.
Why "Four Wheeler" Matters When Shopping for Covers
Walk into any rural feed store and ask for an ATV cover. In many cases, the person behind the counter will say "you mean a four wheeler cover?" The term splits cleanly along regional and age lines — older riders and many in the southern United States commonly call them four wheelers, while manufacturers and coastal retailers default to ATV. This creates a strange gap in how covers get marketed versus how people actually search for them.
The practical consequence: you'll find the exact same cover listed under different names across retailers, sometimes with different sizing charts. A Polaris Sportsman 570 owner searching "four wheeler cover" sees different results than someone typing "ATV cover," even though they need identical products. The machines are the same. The covers are the same. Only the search terms differ.
The Length Band System Explained
Forget manufacturer-specific sizing for a moment. Nearly every cover maker uses the same underlying system: length bands in roughly 10-inch increments. A size Medium typically covers machines from roughly 75-85 inches, Large handles approximately 85-95 inches, and X-Large spans around 95-105 inches. The bands overlap slightly at the edges to account for measurement variation.
This matters because Yamaha's Grizzly 700 measures 83.5 inches in overall length, putting it squarely in Medium territory — but add a front rack extension and rear cargo box, and you've jumped to Large. The machine didn't change. What needs covering did.
Most riders measure wrong. They eyeball the seat-to-handlebar distance or check the spec sheet for wheelbase. Neither number tells you what a cover needs to span. You want tip-to-tail with everything installed: the front brush guard to the back of the rear rack, including any mounted accessories that stick out.
How Accessories Change Your Size Requirements
Here's what actually adds length.
- Front bumpers and brush guards: typically 4-6 inches beyond stock
- Rear cargo boxes: 8-12 inches depending on model
- Gun boots and tool tubes: 3-5 inches if they mount vertically above the rack
- Winch fairleads: 2-3 inches at the nose
- Spare tire carriers: 6-10 inches when mounted rear
A stock Honda Rancher 420 runs approximately 82 inches and fits a Medium cover comfortably. Add a front winch bumper and rear Kolpin gun boot, and you're at roughly 94 inches — now you need Large. The width rarely changes enough to matter (most machines sit between approximately 45-48 inches), but height can jump significantly with windshields or roof racks.
I've seen riders buy based on engine size, assuming bigger displacement means bigger machine. A 700cc sport quad is often shorter than a 450cc utility model with full racks. Measure the actual footprint with accessories, not the spec sheet.
Sizing by Brand and Model Class
Polaris Sportsman Series (450-850cc utility models): Most fall in the roughly 82-86 inch range stock, fitting Medium covers. The Sportsman 570 and 850 share nearly identical dimensions despite the power difference. With typical hunting accessories (front bumper, rear box), expect to need Large.
Honda Foreman and Rancher (420-520cc): These cluster tightly around approximately 82-84 inches. Medium covers work for stock machines. The Foreman Rubicon with factory front rack adds approximately 3 inches, still within Medium range unless you mount additional gear.
Yamaha Grizzly (450-700cc): The entire Grizzly line measures within approximately 2 inches of each other in length, all landing in the roughly 83-85 inch band. Medium is standard. The Kodiak series runs slightly shorter at approximately 80-82 inches, making it one of the few modern utility quads that genuinely fits a Small cover when stripped down.
Can-Am Outlander (450-1000cc): These run long — the Outlander MAX two-up models stretch to approximately 90+ inches stock, requiring Large minimum. Even the standard Outlander 570 sits at roughly 85 inches, putting it at the top edge of Medium. Most Can-Am owners size up.
Kawasaki Brute Force and Prairie: The Brute Force 750 measures approximately 84 inches, but the wide front fenders make it feel bigger than it is. Medium covers fit, though they'll be snug around the front plastics. The older Prairie models (2000-2013) run shorter at approximately 78-81 inches.
Sport Quads (Raptor, TRX, YFZ): These are the exception to utility sizing. A Yamaha Raptor 700 measures approximately 74 inches despite being a full-size sport machine. Small or Medium covers work, depending on whether you've added extended A-arms or aftermarket bumpers. The Measurement Process That Actually Works
Park the machine on level ground. Run a tape measure from the furthest forward point (usually the brush guard or front bumper) to the furthest rear point (top of the cargo box or back of the rear rack). Don't measure to the ground — you're measuring the horizontal span the cover needs to drape over.
Check the height next. Measure from the ground to the highest point, which is usually the handlebars on a utility quad or the top of a windshield if installed. Most covers list a maximum height spec around approximately 48-52 inches. If you're running a full windshield and roof combo, verify the cover's height rating.
Width matters least because machines vary only approximately 3-4 inches across the entire ATV category, and covers have elastic hems that cinch down. But if you're running extended A-arms or wide aftermarket fenders, add those inches to the stock width spec.
Write down all three dimensions. Now compare to the manufacturer's size chart — not the generic Small/Medium/Large labels, but the actual inch ranges they list. If you're within approximately 2 inches of a size boundary, go larger. Covers stretch to fit smaller machines easily. They don't stretch to fit bigger ones.
What Happens When You Size Wrong
An undersized cover creates three problems immediately. First, it won't reach the ground, leaving a roughly 4-6 inch gap where rain, snow, and dirt blow underneath. Second, the fabric pulls tight across edges and corners, concentrating UV exposure and abrasion on those stress points. Third, wind gets under the cover and turns it into a sail, ripping tie-downs loose or tearing the fabric at grommets.

The pattern is consistent: buyers measure the machine, order the corresponding size, then discover their accessories push them into the next band up.
Oversized covers cause different issues. Excess fabric pools on the ground, wicking moisture up through capillary action. The cover shifts in wind, rubbing paint and plastics. Tie-down points don't align with the machine's anchor spots, making it hard to secure properly.
The fix is simple but requires accepting that your $12,000 machine needs a $60 cover instead of a $45 one. Size up when you're borderline. The cost difference between Medium and Large is typically around $10-15, while the cost of repainting faded plastics or replacing a torn cover can run several hundred dollars.
Material Specs That Matter More Than Brand
Cover fabric gets marketed with confusing terminology — 600D polyester, marine-grade, solution-dyed — but only a few specs actually affect performance. Denier measures thread thickness; higher numbers mean heavier, more abrasion-resistant fabric. According to Duck Covers' fabric testing data, 1200 denier fabric provides industrial-grade protection with maximum abrasion resistance, commonly used for commercial outdoor equipment.
For four wheelers stored outdoors year-round, you want minimum 600D fabric. Anything lighter (300D, 420D) works fine for garage storage or short-term outdoor use, but won't survive a winter under snow load. The fabric should have a waterproof coating (PVC or polyurethane) on the inside and UV inhibitors throughout — not just on the surface, where they wear off.
Breathability matters more than most riders realize. A completely waterproof cover traps condensation underneath, promoting rust and mildew. Look for covers with vent panels or breathable fabric zones. The moisture needs somewhere to go.
Seam construction separates cheap covers from durable ones. Double-stitched or heat-welded seams don't leak. Single-stitch seams with no seam tape start weeping water within six months. Check the product photos — you should see reinforcement at stress points like corners and tie-down grommets.
Storage Location Changes Everything
A four wheeler parked under a pole barn needs different coverage than one sitting in an open field. Under a roof, you're protecting against dust, bird droppings, and UV coming through gaps in the siding. A lighter 300-450D cover works fine because it's not handling direct rain or snow load.
Outside with no overhead protection, the cover becomes the only barrier against weather. You need heavy fabric (600D minimum), reinforced tie-downs, and a fit tight enough that wind can't get underneath. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends proper storage of ATVs and UTVs in covered structures to protect from weather damage and extend equipment lifespan, but when that's not possible, a quality cover becomes critical infrastructure.
The worst scenario is partial shade — under a tree or beside a building. You get the worst of both: UV exposure during part of the day, moisture from shade and leaf litter, and abrasion from falling branches. Covers in these spots may need replacement approximately twice as often as those in full sun or full shelter.
The Tie-Down System Nobody Talks About
Covers come with elastic hems, drawstrings, buckle straps, or some combination. The elastic hem is standard and works adequately in calm conditions. It fails in wind or snow because there's no mechanical lock — just tension that gradually loosens.
Buckle straps that clip under the frame rails or around the axles provide real security. Look for covers with at least four attachment points — front, rear, and both sides for optimal security. The straps should have quick-release buckles, not cheap plastic clips that break in cold weather.
Some riders add their own tie-down system using bungee cords hooked to the frame. This works but creates abrasion points where the cords rub the cover. If you're going this route, put a rag or piece of foam between the cord and fabric at each contact point.
Wind is the enemy. A cover that fits properly and ties down securely can typically handle 40+ mph gusts. A loose cover in 20 mph wind can shred itself quickly. The difference is entirely in how well it's secured.

When Generic Sizing Doesn't Apply
Two-up models break the standard sizing bands. A Polaris Sportsman 570 Touring or Can-Am Outlander MAX runs approximately 10-15 inches longer than the solo version of the same machine. These need X-Large or XX-Large covers, even though the engine and width match smaller models.
Youth ATVs (50-125cc) often need custom or motorcycle covers because they fall below the Small category most ATV cover makers start with. A Honda TRX90 measures about 58 inches long — too small for even a Small ATV cover, but too wide for a motorcycle cover. Look for "youth ATV" specific sizing or use a large motorcycle cover.
